Invading Minds

756 words; about a 4 minute read
Mission:
Ab Intra
Location: USS Odin, Bridge
"Fascinating." Sovok said as he read the display in front of him. The captain's seat was not a usual posting for him, but it was the duty of any in the command school to relieve their superior when ordered. The benefit of the captain's seat was access to all systems and displays, and as the on board sensors scanned the anomaly below them, he was intrigued by the data stream.
"These readings are highly unusual. I cannot ascertain the source or even the effect." Sovok mused to himself as his display chirped its error messages. The electromagnetic spectrum readings were off the charts in this area. It did not appear to be dangerous to humanoid life, but the unknown could entail anything, but the inquisitive mind feared not the dark.
"Sovok to transporter room." The vulcan began in a even yet authoritative tone. "Keep a transporter lock on the away team if you can." As Sovok thought on other possible command decisions he could make to aid his crewmates, a tingle in the Vulcan's mind gave him pause.
It was in the part of his mind that most other species did not possess. It was not his logical mind nor his suppressed emotional mind; this was the tingle of the part of his mind only used in meditation or in deep intimacy. The mind of the psychic, the third eye, the gate the unknown; these were all common names for the abilities not uncommon nor common among Sovok's people.
Sovok spent much of his time mastering this part of him, and to the Vulcan, it was another skill just like piloting or martial arts. It was there to be mastered and called upon when needed, but rarely did the need arise. Now was one of those times.
"I sense your presence." Sovok said aloud as he rose to his feet on the bridge, much to the confusion of the junior officers who served under his command. "We were not aware there were-" Sovok said with an even diplomatic tone till the force of some unseen energy knocked him to his knees. A swirl of cacophonous noise entered the Vulcan's mind. Voices. Feelings. Questions. The trained officer fought against then all. He respected the needs of other cultures, but his mind was a sacred place and he felt himself being invaded.
"No!" Sovok called out as he grabbed his head. More noise came to him; a redoubling of effort. Whatever force was invading him was being met with resistance, and that was responded to with extra effort. Sovok looked to his fellow bridge crew and saw similar struggles upon their faces.
Sovok strained against their force with all his might. With a strained, mighty hand he reached for his comm badge. As his hand neared the communication device, the forced effort to move against his will was all the invaders needed. Soon his mental walls came crashing down, and Sovok was no longer Sovok.
The analytic vulcan felt himself being locked away in his own mind. He was aware of his surroundings but could do nothing to influence his own body. He too felt the beings scan his mind for memories, for code, procedures, and for specifics. Sovok thought on what he could do.
Suicidal thoughts came to him, but as he thought on harming himself so that these beings could not endanger his ship with his body and memories, he was made to suffer for it. A jolt of neural electricity hit the part of the brain in which he now resided; a clear message that such thoughts would not be tolerated.
The hand that reached for his comm finally met it as the Vulcan stood to his feet. The chirp of the communicator was damning to Sovok's ears. They knew how to operate his body, use their technology, and do harm if they wished. Panic would not do, however. Sovok steeled his mind and observed his foes from within.
He would wait, he would be patient, and strike when the opportunity presented itself. They knew this, too. They would have to keep this trained mind suppressed in order for their plans to succeed. Perhaps that is why they employed multiple beings within him, but for the moment, their victory over him seemed complete.
"Lieutenant Sovok here." The beings said through him with a perfect recreation of his tone and mannerisms. "All departments send briefing reports to the bridge. We are encountering the unknown once again. Let us be prepared for whatever comes next. Sovok out."

I reread this post for the third time, and I have to say I think it's very good, very impressive.
