475 words; about a 2 minute read

Mission: Tyr's Hand

=/\= T-Minus 8 Hours...

After speaking briefly with the chief of security and sending him off to get checked over, Mallory had stayed on the bridge and listened to the numbers...

This was perhaps one of the most slipshod Starfleet task she'd ever seen performed. It was far from perfect, but it was generally effective. Their communications and transporter beam reliability wavered with every issue the line of shuttles encountered, but after nearly two agonizing hours, it was declared that they had everyone they could find. The sensor reach wasn't perfected enough to find all bio-signatures alone, so it mostly relayed on comm badges, non-Terran bio-signs, and...luck.

Mallory walked down to the cargo bay to see her crew, and she was shocked by what she saw.

One side of the bay was lined...

...with corpses.

There had to be at least two dozen, probably more, of them. Some of the ones nearest to her were very obviously dead--they were missing crucial body parts. Others, she felt safe in assuming were dead or beyond help. Her stomach tried to claw its way into her throat as she realized just how long it was going to take to catalogue who was alive, who was dead, who they weren't able to recover, and who they didn't have hope to even now...

Overwhelmed in a way that she was ashamed of but unable to avoid, she hurried back into the corridor before speaking with anyone. She forced deep, slow breaths into her chest as she leaned her head against the wall.

The enormity of it all just swept over her like a tidal wave, and she didn't know how she was going to withstand it.

"Engineering to Thorne."

Swallowing down the lump in her throat, she tapped her badge. "Thorne here."

"We will be ready to attempt the slingshot in just over seven and a half hours."

"Thank you. Continue your work. Thorne out."

They had just under eight hours until they could return home...at least, some of them could.

OOC NOTES - ATTN: EVERYONE: Every character that is coming back to the ship is back on the ship now. There are NPCs that were lost on the planet or maybe space. We don't know. If you would like to make someone up that your character knew, feel free. Several NPCs (plus at least one PC) is dead and back on the ship.

Department heads who are able should go back to their duties, whether dealing with the rescued crew or through out the ship. Feel free to write about going and seeing people in the cargo bay, etc.,

There is an 8-hour In-Character window for logging now that folks are back on board and before we slingshot and try to get home. I'll leave this door open for a few days and then move us on!
