Mission: Tyr's Hand
Location: Captain's Ready Room

The math had taken hold and without realizing it, she had been swept up in the purity of the work. It had taken time, not that she noticed its passage any more than she noticed the cups of tea someone or other had thrust into her hand. Finally, with the calculations completed and proofed, they'd moved into the testing phase where someone had thrust food in front of her which she set impatiently to one side as new parameters occurred to her. And then came the moment, when she and her team realized that nothing further needed doing. They had the solution at last. She copied the results onto a PADD, because command types liked that sort of thing, and headed up to the Ready Room where, or so she had been assured, the Captain generally lurked. She stopped at the door and pressed the chime.

'Lurking' wasn't how Captain Mallory Thorne felt at that moment, if the truth were told. The CAG had just left, and the COps had just died, and... Mal felt like she had no idea what was going on. She was on her feet and looking at war-torn Earth down below them through her viewport.

"Enter," she called when she heard the chime, hoping this wasn't more bad news.

Remy entered and walked up to where the Captain stood. "I have the equations worked out for our return," she said. "Slingshot around the sun. We've tested it against a number of possible scenarios and the math holds. It will work."

Oh. Well. That was good news, then. Mal's light brows rose. "I've read about previous ships doing that. Can the Odin tolerate it in our current state? Was that part of the scenarios run?" Of course, she wouldn't leave until she was sure of the fate of the missing crew, but still... This was a pretty big Something. At last.

"It should," Remy said. "Whole lot more possibilities for error when we factor in the current state of the ship. No question. But as long as the ship can hold together at maximum warp, this," she said as she held up the PADD, "will get us home. Course, between now and then, the Chief Engineer should run his own simulations. Make sure he concurs."

"Her simulations," Mal said distractedly as she took the PADD and read it over. "It's a good start. I'd like you to take this to engineering to discuss it with Lieutenant Kang. I'd like to be ready to move as soon as possible. As soon as we get our crew back..." Or determine they are truly lost to us.

Remy nodded though the pronouns didn't matter to her so much. "I'll head down there next," she said and then, almost as an afterthought because Captains did like to give permission and all that. "If there's nothing else, Captain?"

"Nothing else," Mal said quickly. "Head to engineering..."

[Short While Later]

Tiernin was running a series of scans of the plasma relays as a precaution. They have a knack for getting misaligned quickly. It was something that needed to be watched and since she had the time she decided to get it done. Now especially since they were not where they were supposed to be.

Remy entered Engineering and stopped just inside the door. She picked out Kang and headed in her direction. "Lieutenant Kang," she said as she approached. "I've just completed the equations we'll need for the ...." She paused and cocked her head to one side. "I'm making assumptions again. Okay, so, I've done some research and a lot of math and figured out a way to get us back to our own time. It requires a slingshot around the sun; my team and I have run the equations through scenarios that test for certain conditions but ... we need to test against the condition of the ship. Whether the Odin can break free of the sun's gravity when it needs to ..."

"Well....I know the slingshot theory quite well....as for the ship being able to withstand the strain of that speed......it is another question. If memory serves, it was put to the test by the captain of the Enterprise by using the thrusters for break away speed and for slowing the bird of prey down afterward. Am I correct so far?", Kang asked.

Remy nodded her agreement."Light speed breakaway factor via artificial time warp, technically, and yes, the Enterprise performed that maneuver three times. So its well documented though, as I said, I've done the calculations myself, factored in fuel, acceleration mass, and all that. What's left is the condition of the ship and how that will affect the breakaway."

"At the moment this ship would probably break up from the sun's gravity, however, give me a few hours to strengthen the SIF fields and the AG fields to maximum. Then get the impulse and warp up to 110% and all the fusion reactors online and fed into the RCS thrusters, then you could do it easily", Kang said grinning. She knew that she had to get done all of what she told Remy or the ship would not make the slingshot maneuver.

Remy smiled in return, sharing the commiseration with the enormity of the work that needed to be done, and shuffled slightly, one foot to the other. "If you feed me the stats, once you get everything working the way it should, I can do a last simulation before we try the real thing ... whenever that will be." She cocked her head slightly to one side. "So ... just how many hours you figuring on?"

Kang looked at Remy, "All told?......24 hours give or take. I'm gonna have to have my people work round the clock to get everything done", she said. Kang knew her people would get the work done. What needed most was to get propulsion back. It was essential that the engines worked properly and the RCS thrusters at full power for the breaking maneuver as well. Technically it a lot of work but nothing new for Kang as she had studied her Enterprise history well.

"Alright," Remy said. "I'm off to the next thing on my list. I'll be waiting to hear ..."
