The young ensign was very smart. After getting her orders, she had grabbed a junior lieutenant to help her. She did remember her training, but simulations and doing it with an actual ship's core were two very different things. "I don't like this," the male junior lieutenant said, looking at everything that needed to be deactivated.
"I know, I know," the female ensign said. "The one thing they tell you in the academy is the EXACT opposite of what Sabine wants us to do." The female ensign put emphasis on the word "exact." The man just nodded, but they got to work. Some of the things that needed to be deactivated needed to be done in order.
After a few hours, it was done. "Lieutenant Sabine, we have disconnected everything you listed. We should no longer be looking to connect to something that's not there," the ensign reported, looking over some diagnostic reports after she sent them up to the bridge.
On the bridge, Madalene started looking over the diagnostics and immediately saw a difference in the speed of pulling up data. "Captain... I have good news finally," Madalene said flatly as she read. "We have finally dealt with the slow response time. We now finally have real-time sensor data coming in."
Mallory looked up at her ops officer, her brows rising. "That is good news," she said, almost shocked that such a thing existed on this ship anymore. "What's the real-time data telling us?"
"There's nothing really good to report. The atmosphere is, well...troubling. The amount of radiation is not good. Which means any of the crew that is down there is being exposed to these levels," Madalene said, pulling up the data. "Sooner or later, they are gonna start having symptoms from the radiation. We need to make a move soon or we are gonna have some big issues."
"How long is sooner?" Mal asked quietly, although her mind was already racing through all the calculations and tasks and orders that needed to be seen to right now.
"Like, now..." Madalene said, looking at the captain. "We need to consider damning the timeline protocols to get our people back."
The captain was pretty sure she was already doing that. "What's the status of transporter operations?" she asked solemnly, knowing that they hadn't been working before. The atmospheric pollution and interference prevented a proper transporter lock on anything.
"They are working just fine," Madalene said. "...but I suggest we don't use them. The pollution and radiation, well, can cause problems when beaming biological matter especially something as complicated as sentient beings."
"So that means the transporters are fine but transporter operations are not," Mal said wryly. "If we can't use them safely, then they aren't operational for our purposes. Without them, however, how best to we actually get our crew off the surface? We only have so many shuttles. Is there any way, even...unconventional or out of the box, that we can use to safely utilize the transporters?"
Madalene just nodded. "I might be able to filter out the radiation and pollution, but that is gonna take time and, well, very close-range scans." Madalene thought back to her transporter courses back in the academy. And this was always the issue when it came to transporting biological material.
Mal pursed her lips thoughtfully. "Talk to Lieutenant Beryl about the close-range scans and the feasibility of doing that while the ship is in this state," she said. "Then run estimates about how long it will take to create filters for the atmospheric...crap that's out there." It wasn't an approved word in the Starfleet Captain Lexicon, but it was the one she was going with.
"Right away," Madalene said, nodding for another ops officer to come and replace her while she went to go find Lieutenant Beryl.
"Good luck, Lieutenant," Mallory said by way of quiet dismissal.
