The bridge was silent for a long moment.

Seated in the captain's chair, Mallory stared at the viewscreen as she went over Jackson's brief report. Lieutenant Malena was dead... This was the first crewmember to have died under Mallory's command. They had been lucky in their last mission that despite its troubles, no one had died. And much of her crew was missing now, but they didn't know for sure that they were dead...but they knew for sure with the chief of operations.

Mallory had sent her out on that mission. It weighed on her shoulder like piles of rocks.

It wasn't that she hadn't known it would happen at some point and would be painful, but that still had not prepared her for what it was going to feel like. She couldn't recall a time in her life when she'd felt quite like this.

Her chest felt like it was constricting until she couldn't breathe, but she had to ignore it. She was the captain, and now she had to be the captain. "Monitor Jackson's progress back to the ship and be prepared to bring her in if needed," she ordered, her voice hoarse. "Scan the area ahead as best you can to see if we can retrieve Malena's body." Mallory didn't want to leave the woman out there...but she knew she couldn't risk the ship and the other crew by going too far to find a body.

Mallory just had to hope that everything with the other mission went safely...
