Mission:
Tyr's Hand
Location: Remy Cate's Office

Remy was in her office and deep into analysis of the sensor data they'd accumulated going back to one day before their passage through time while formulating hypotheses based on probability. The first that had to be considered was one of the Q however she thought that unlikely since Q-events were generally accompanied by a great deal of posturing and bragging. Though unlikely, it was still possible and so, remained on the list. Navigational and astrometric scans had not picked up the presence of a black hole of any sort.
Science was at the top of the list for things that needed to get done, and Lieutenant Commander Erik Barnett was going to make sure he did all he could to help it. With the disappearance of the first officer, the ship's second officer was suddenly thrust into the role...
He walked into the science section and found the door to Cates' office. He didn't know if the chime was working, so he knocked on the door instead.
The door opened as soon as he stepped close enough to be registered. Remy, who often got lost in her work to the exclusion of everything else, preferred it that way -- else, no one would ever be able to reliably get her attention. And, true to form, she did not notice the door opening nor the figure who now stood in the entrance. She sat at the desk, tailor-fashion, with her elbows propping up her chin. "Okay so, that's a no to the chroniton particles. Where are the navigation logs ..."
"They shouldn't be that hard to find," Erik said as he walked him, hoping he wasn't about to scare her but imaging he was. "So long as the computer's database is working properly."
Remy looked up, blinking in surprise at the individual who had magically appeared before her, and then, nodding, returned to screen. "It was a black star," she said. "Not to be confused with a black hole. High gravitational attraction. We didn't know it was there. Helm did a full on reverse and the result was a whiplash effect which brought us here." She waved the second officer over and gestured toward the readings both from astrometics and from navigation. "See ... here and here. Black star."
Erik was pretty much decided that all science officers were this way, since all those he'd known were... He moved over and looked at her screen. "I can see that. Don't I recall something similar happening to the Enterprise back in...oh, the 2260s?"
"That's right," she said, nodding at him as though he were a star pupil, "they ended up at Earth to because that ... like us ... was the direction they were headed when they pulled away from the black star. And like the Enterprise, it provides us with at least a possibility for a return to our own time."
"I can't quite remember all the details," Erik said thoughtfully, silently amused that she hadn't even asked who he was. Almost none of the crew actually knew him, since the second officer hadn't been needed for much since he'd come on board just...well, a couple of days ago. "How was the Enterprise able to get back to their own time?"
"Risky maneuver but basically a slingshot around the sun, breaking away at the right point," Remy said. "Risky but more controlled than finding that black star and being thrown in some random direction again. The Enterprise crew provided enough documentation on the maneuver that I can start the mathematical calculations." She looked up at him and cocked her head slightly to one side. "I know you're the second officer, Commander. Does this count as reporting or do you want me to pass this along to the Captain as well?"
Erik smiled ruefully. "Right now, I'm the acting first officer, so it counts. Tell me what you know and what we need to know and I can tell the captain."
"Then that brings you up to date," Remy said. "I can start the mathematical equations, as I said. It will take some time to get it right."
"Alright then," he said with a decisive nod. "Please get working on the math and keep me apprised. I will inform the captain of your progress."
She nodded her agreement but really, her attention was already back into the math where it would stay for some time to come.
