Tye ran a hand through her short cropped hair as she adjusted her grip on the duffel she carried, and then gave a tug on her tunic. Only after all of that did she ring the chime to the ready room. She heard a woman's voice on the other side of the door call out, 'Enter.' Taking one more deep breath, the Helm Officer stepped in to the ready room, and approached the Captain's desk. She smiled and offered the PADD she'd been carrying to the woman sitting on the other side of the desk, "Lieutenant Tye Beryl reporting for duty, sir."

Mallory looked at the woman standing in front of her desk, smiling politely for a few seconds while her brain went, Beryl...Beryl... Wait, ridges. Tye? Right! My new chief helm. "Welcome aboard, Lieutenant," the captain said, waving at the chair in front of her desk in invitation.

Tye's smile broadened as she took a seat, "For the record, Captain. . .while I look Bajoran, and I am half Bajoran, my parents followed Earth tradition with my name. My given name is Tye, and my family name is Beryl."

"And telepathic too?" Mal said with amusement. "I was going to ask, so that saves me a question. How was your journey here?"

Beryl's lips twitched in a slight smirk, "Not telepathic, no Captain. The journey was a bit on the long side, but I appreciated the downtime." She looked around the ready room, "You've got yourself a fine ship, sir. I read over her specs and did a bit of sim time on her while in transit. If flying the real thing is as fun as flying on the holodeck, I'm going to love my job."

The captain smiled. She hadn't been in command for very long, but it hadn't taken much time for her to become as enamored with her ship as all captains were. "Oh, I am sure the real thing will be even better. Was your last post a tactical vessel?"

"Yes sir. The Trinity is an Akira-II, and about as tactical as you can get. We saw enough action to keep us all on our toes," Tye replied.

"That's good," Mal said easily. "I'm sure every trick you learned and experience you had will come in handy on this ship. We're set as a border patrol vessel to shore up the tactical edge to this fleet. You'll have to fly around with a bunch of fighters."

Tye smirked, "That's not a problem, sir. We had a wing on the Trinity. We ran drills on launching and landing the fighters while taking fire, but I also had the. . .experience of doing it live on more than one occasion, so I'm not completely wet behind the ears there."

Mal chuckled. "If you were, I might well send you back to the fleet, quite frankly," she said with total honesty. "I wouldn't expect the fleet to assign us a chief helm officer that didn't know what they were doing with a ship in our situation." She paused. "Do you have any questions for me at this time?"

Tilting her head, Tye considered the Captain's question, "Not many, no sir. . .perhaps just two. How long do you expect us to be deployed at a time, and when are you expecting to shove off?"

"We have at least another week in dock, maybe two, while we wait for the full complement of crew to arrive," the captain replied to the latter question first. It was the easier one to answer. "As for deployments... This ship isn't planned to be long-haul or deep-space. We will remained somewhat confined to a planned area, but how long we go between returning to our home base here at Providence and Horizon will be determined each time we head out."

"Fair enough, Captain. Which leads to another question. What would you like your Chief Helm Officer to do while we're docked? Can't exactly. . .navigate, if you know what I mean," Tye asked with a smirk.

Mallory half-smiled with one brow rising. "What have you usually done while your ship is docked?"

Tye laughed softly, "Fair point." She shrugged, "If it's down-time, then R&R, but if it's not down time. . .work on scheduling shifts and personnel rotations. Run everyone through sims and evaluate their performance. . .business as usual."

The captain waved her hand. "Then there you go," she said. "Whenever we're docked, the station and colony below will be available for the crew to enjoy some downtime on. But you'll be expected to keep your department at full readiness all the same."

The lieutenant wiggled her brows, "Not to worry, Captain. I'll stay on top of it. If there's nothing else, I'll find the quartermaster and get my assigned quarters?"

"Please do," Mal said easily, nodding to the door. "You're dismissed, Lieutenant Beryl, and if you have any questions, my ready room door is always open. Except, you know, when it's not." She chuckled.

Tye laughed softly, "Of course, Captain. Thank you. I'm looking forward to serving with you." With that, she pushed herself from the chair, grabbed her bag and left the Captain to go find the quartermaster.
