Mission: Thought & Memory

The sun shone brightly overhead and a bead of sweat slid down Tye Beryl's cheek as she reached back and reached into her chalk bag to coat her fingers in a light dusting of chalk as she scanned the rock face in front of her. Just above her, the outcrop went into an overhang. The overhang had been her nemesis all morning, but she was determined to beat it. She felt slack in the line, and looked over her shoulder, "Take!"

"On it!"

Tye looked back to the outcrop and moved one of her feet up to a higher foothold, though the hold was tiny. She didn't need for too long, just long enough to push her upwards to get the next handhold, and then she'd bring her other foot up to a nice little hole off to her right. Three times, her foot slipped, two times she missed the hold, and the last time? She almost had it, but somehow slipped. She took a deep breath and pushed off of the micro-toe-hold, brought her hand up and grabbed the hold, then pulled her last foot up to the hold off to the right. She rotated her knee to pull her hip in towards the outcrop, and moved the left foot to a slightly larger hold. She'd done it, but staying over the overhang for too long would fatigue her.

She already knew her next move and reached over her head for a large hold, brought her right leg up, then moved to another hand hold. She always kept 3 points of contact with the rock face, though that was more of a challenge with the overhang. Two more moves saw her clear the lip of the overhang and start up the last ten feet of the route. Just as she pulled herself over the ledge her comm badge chirped, "Lieutenant Beryl, we are thirty minutes out from Providence Station."

Standing up as she finished the climb, Tye tapped her badge, "Beryl here. . .acknowledged. Thank you." After the channel closed, she looked up, "Computer, end program." The scene was replaced with the view of the four holodeck walls. Beryl unfastened her climbing harness and stepped out of it before leaving the holodeck and making her way to her temporary quarters. She took a quick sonic shower, and by the time the transport ship pulled into dock at Providence, she approached the airlock, her one duffel bag slung over her shoulder.

The Lieutenant had never been to Providence Station, but she wasn't here to get acquainted with the station. No. . .she was here to find her new ship, the USS Odin where she'd be the Chief Helm officer. Lieutenant Commander T'gil encouraged Tye to apply for the CHelm position on the Odin, though Captain Hanson hadn't seemed as please to lose one of his up and coming helm officers.

Beryl left the Trinity two weeks ago, and it had been a bit of a circuitous route to get to Providence. The Helm Officer didn't mind, as it gave her a lot of time to play on various rock walls in the various holodecks of the various transports she'd been taking. Given the upcoming assignment, she didn't know how soon or how often she'd get the chance to climb.

Shifting her bag on her shoulder, Tye found someone who looked like they worked on the station and asked directions to where the Odin was docked. Fortunately, the ship wasn't docked too far away, and ten minutes later saw the helm officer arrive at the air lock. After verifying her credentials, the security officer returned the PADD she'd handed him, "Welcome to the USS Odin, Lieutenant. The Captain is in her ready room. You should report to her right away. Your PADD has been updated with your assigned quarters."

"Thank you, Lieutenant," Tye replied before proceeding through the airlock. She found the nearest turbolift, and called out, "Bridge."

It was time to meet the new CO.
