It felt like they had been walking forever.
Fortunately, they hadn't actually seen any other people since the little girl with the gun, although Lorelei had pulled Ensign Halar aside a couple of times when she thought they might be about to encounter someone. Both times, though, it turned out to be some of the local wildlife that clearly could not have given any less of a damn about the three out-of-place Odin crew members wandering on toward...who-the-fuck-knew-what.
"I'm no doctor, but I think we're going to need to find some water soon, sir," she commented after a time.
"You're quite right, my dear. Quite right," Finley replied and looked around for a moment. "You're no doctor," he finished and continued walking.
As the group started to crest a hill they notice some movement in a clearing up ahead. They can make anything out visually because of the steepness of the terrain down the hill. Still to avoid being noticed Lorelei signaled for the group to duck out of cover and into the closest scrub brush. They could easily make out the sounds of an altercation from below. It sounded like 3 or 4 aggravated voices and every now and a very faintly, a scared voice.
Ensign Halar asked "Do you think we should head down and to help? It sounds like someone is trouble down there."
"How do you propose we help? Sharp wits and harsh language? We are not armed with so much as a stale loaf of bread!" Finley replied.
"Some of us are very skilled in unarmed combat, sir," Lorelei said tightly. The more they walked, the harder it was getting to keep her tongue civil around her 'superior' officer. "Perhaps we should at least try to move in closer and ascertain the situation?"
"By all means. Let us ascertain," Finley replied and held up his hand as if to ask the Petty Officer to lead the way.
Just remember that if you get court-martialed, Quinn will never let you hear the end of it, she told herself as she forced a respectful nod and spun on her heel, moving carefully toward the source of the noise. Of course, she had done pretty good not thinking about her brother...but now it hit her like a tidal wave of sorrow.
Was he okay up there? She hoped he was.
As the noise got louder, she crouched down slightly and came up to the top of a slight incline. Looking down, she saw two men beating up another. The third was trying to fight back and was doing admirably, but he was clearly losing. She felt her muscles tense. "Permission to engage, sir?" she asked tightly.
"If you want to fight, then don't let me stop you." Finley replied.
"Maybe we should make a distraction while Petty Officer Lorelei heads down?" And without a waiting for a response from Fin, Ensign Halar started shouting and stumbling around like a tweaker roaming the streets of Earth circa 2019.
For a moment, Lorelei completely forgot what she had been planning on doing.
Down below, the two men beating up the third couldn't help but stop and stare as well. In fact, that seemed to be a theme at the moment: staring at the part-mummy who was shouting and flailing. Whether the strange head-wrappings or the strange behavior was more eye-catching was pretty much impossible to tell, but Lorelei had to snap herself out of her small daze and return to the task at hand.
She had to admit, though, that the distraction helped. Instead of running in guns blazing, she looked around and found...
...a rock.
Grabbing it, she hauled back like a baseball pitcher and threw with speed. Being a decent shot, the rock hit one man in the head and dropped him. The other decided this wasn't worth the trouble and took off, hauling ass across the bleak landscape. The third man--now left alone--collapsed in a pile of bruises and blood.
"Doc, I think you'll wanna get down there," Lorelei said.
Finley didn't bother to reply, but simply glared at the Petty Office before shuffling down to the injured. He ignored the assailant for the moment and inspected the injuries of the victim. This was a a fairly simple way to triage he thought. Thugs were lowest priority. Finley tore off strips of the man's shirt and made a sort of bandage for a bleeding cut on his head. "There's not much I can do for him without any instruments. It's hard to even assess how bad his head injuries are, but I'd guess he has a concussion. It could be worse, or could be minimal damage. We will have to wait and see," he told his crew mates. He then glanced at the man dropped by PO3 Lorelei. "This one is much the same. You'll want to tie him up, as I suspect he will survive his wound as well."
Ensign Halar trotted down the hill a few paces behind Finley to observe Lorelei's hit. She sat back and observed her new boss while he bandaged the victim, then she went on to hog tie and bandage the assailant. Once stabilized she searched through the man's clothes for clues about the altercation. She found two identification badges and a small vial full of seeds insides. She called out to the others "I found some identification badges and one of them looks to belong to our victim. His name is Jim Jimminaugh." Then she discreetly slipped the vial into her pocket for her sample collection back on the ship.
At this point, Lorelei stood back a bit since the medical people seemed to be doing...medical things. Although maybe hog-tying wasn't a medical trait, but the ensign had done it well. "Do you think there's...a hospital around here somewhere?" Her voice and expression were equally doubtful as she looked around the semi-wartorn surroundings.
Finley looked around at the waste around him. "No, I do not. I doubt there's much of anything left running for civilians around here. Presumably there's a war on somewhere, and experience tells me there will be some blood soaked doctors nearby working on the worst of the injured. Our friend here wouldn't even get looked at if we could find them. The best we can do his hide him in a quiet place, or we can build a litter and attempt to haul him around with us," Finley said.
Just then Ensign Halar excused herself and wondered off. After a few minutes of loudly humming 'whistle while you work' she skips back towards the team with a litter. "I built this with my hands. It should be moderately sturdy. Can I get a hand from you guys to secure Mr. Jim? We don't want him flopping off the side and going 'kerplunk'."
Lorelei's brow rose as she looked at the litter. Apparently they were taking him with them? "Maybe we'll find somewhere that can take him?" She shrugged a little.
Finley glared at Ensign Halar and her crafts project. "Yes, I suppose we'll have to," he replied.
