"Now!"
The call from the captain bounced over the hacked and juryrigged comms system inside her own damned ship, which had been taken over by...whatever these beings were. So far, all they had managed to ascertain for sure was that they had come from the atmosphere of the planet and just fucked everything and just about everyone up. They had a weakness, though, which the people on this ship that still could fight back were going to exploit. Mallory wanted her ship back!
As soon as the order went down, the crew who had gotten free and gotten into positioned did their thing. It was one giant button-push and middle-finger all at the same time.
At that moment, something was sent through the ship that closely approximated what Ensign Walker had done using the comm badges. It washed over and through the ship like some sort of holy, cleansing fire and ripped every single one of the usurpers out of their hosts. Everyone, however, was affected by the noise of course--even if they weren't "possessed"--but they would recover. Those who lost their unwelcome guests tended to fall unconscious in the process, but were otherwise well.
Little good could be said of these beings, but at least they had not abused their hosts.
The 'cloud' of electromagnetic energy was catapulted back into the atmosphere of the planet below, and the the Odin's shield was put up with a resonance that would prevent them from returning. The officers in navigation that were still conscious and capable made sure that the ship made a quick escape out of Dodge and got as far from this accursed colony as they could...
This ship didn't have enough doctors and counselors to deal with the fallout from the past twenty-four hours. Had it really only been that long? It felt like weeks...or maybe months. Whatever, it felt like forever. Now it was time to mop them all up and fix the ship, but over half the crew had been taken over. 'Physician, heal thyself' was more than just a quaint saying of yore, and they were all needing to help each other. It was a lot to deal with, for each individual and for the ship as a whole.
It was afterhours now, and while Mal had worked past the end of alpha shift, she was in her quarters now.
The door chirped.
"Enter," she called wearily. She had a cup of strong tea in her hands as she turned away from the viewport, which now behind her showed the ship rushing onward.
The person who walked in was somewhere toward the bottom of the list of people Mal expected to walk in. It was Lieutenant Colonel Natalia Reyes, their own little spy for the Terran Union. She looked...uncomfortable, a little awkward perhaps, which was a surprise. She offered the captain a smile, but the expression didn't really looked like it belonged there and the captain just hoped she'd stop soon. "Colonel," Mal greeted with a nod. "What can I do for you?" She wasn't going to bother with pleasantries. She knew the other woman wasn't here to chat.
The colonel stepped forward and held up a PADD to show Mallory before setting it down on the coffee table. "This is a planet not far from here," she said. "It's a Union-allied, and Union ships are welcome to take shore leave there. I have messaged them and they said the Odin can stop there and take a break."
Frowning, Mal eyed the PADD like it was about to change into a snake and bite her. "That's an...unexpectedly nice gesture." It was blunt, but she didn't have the energy for subtlty.
Reyes shrugged. "I went through this with you all, Captain," she said, still sounding awkward. "I thought it would be...good for everyone."
"I'll consider it," Mal granted with a nod.
That seemed to be the extent of her graciousness and so Reyes left in a seeming hurry.
The PADD stayed on the table for a while, the captain waiting to see if just maybe it would become something venomous...but after a while, she read it.
