539 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Tyr's Hand
Location: Medical

LtCmdr Finley Bell sat at his office desk attached to the medical bay aboard the USS Odin. He was staring at a PADD and kept reading a couple sentences over and over again. He was reviewing the personnel files of what little staff he had. He had been aboard ship for all of about twelve minutes before the great temporal adventures had began so there were plenty of normal administrative tasks to attend to. The current file was on an Ensign Bree Collin. Or was it Conlin? Fin squinted at his PADD again. It was indeed Conlin.

Suddenly there was a cry from outside his office in the medical bay. Finley stopped reading and shot a look towards his open door, and listened. Had he really heard that? After a few moments pause he returned to reading and was again interrupted by a cry of pain. He was sure he had heard it this time. He rose from his chair and made his way for the door, but before he could make it all the way into the bay there was another shout of pain that joined the previous.

Fin turned to look into the medical bay and it was dark and quiet. It was "night" time on the ship, such as it was, so the lights were turned off. The patients who were capable of consciousness were asleep. All was still, and there was no sign of anyone who could have been making the sounds he'd heard.

An awful, pain-filled sobbing started behind Fin and he felt he guts twist into knots. He moaned almost silently to himself as a cool sweat broke out on his forehead. Another voice joined the first, but this time it was almost a scream. The screamer brought a handful of her friends as he finally willed his body to move and turned around towards his office again which was where the voices seemed to emanate. He saw into his lit office which confirmed what he already knew that there was nobody in there. The voices were all in his head. "Mmmrr...hello again," Finley said to himself and the empty office as he shuffled to his chair. He flopped down and stared at the wall next to his desk. A cry started and as soon as it registered in his brain he hit himself on his temples with both hands. "Motherfucker!" he shouted. Nobody replied.

Finley reached down into his boot and pulled out his flask. He briefly looked at the ship which had been engraved there, and the text that named it the USS Bluefin. He took two long pulls on it, and it was empty. He sat staring into space as the booze burned in his gullet. The memories were all coming back. All of those people dying. So many dead. He could name them all. His memory was filled with their names, and their injuries, and their crying. His current crew felt impacted by the horrors they'd just seen but it was just a dent to Fin, he'd hardly known their names and his list was already full. He had no more room for names.

Fin looked back towards the PADD on his desk. Who was this again? Connel?
