I found a rock

859 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: Home
Location: Bridge

Madalene was on the bridge using the science console, as she filtered through the data that Cydwenn has put together. Not exactly sure what she was looking for but hoping to find something that didn't line up. Mostly, so they could potentially go explore it get back to the roots of the Federation when she heard the lift doors open.

"Morn'" Kris spoke, stifling a yawn. She carried a large mug of steaming hot coffee in one hand, her uniform not quite on straight, and wearing a baseball cap with 'Von Braun waystation' printed on the front and a three-inch diameter plush moon on a two-inch spring bouncing on top of it.

"Mornin', bosslet," Madalene said smirking a little as she switched into some Boomer creole, "long night?"

Kris just muttered in Russian as she slumped in the central chair and closed her eyes. "I always have trouble waking up when it's dark out. And we're in space. Where it's always dark out. So you can see my problem," she complained before taking a sip of her coffee, making a face, reaching in a pocket, and putting some vodka from a small bottle in the coffee.

Madalene just chuckled, "Russians," she muttered, before going back to looking over the data, "so any word on next assignment?" She asked as she zoomed in on the map, "unh, interesting?" She muttered to herself.

"No, nothing yet," Kris mused. Though at the mutter she perked up and sat up straight in the chair. "Find something?"

"Maybe, not sure I'll need some more time, but something isn't here that was in the mirror or alternate universe," Madalene said.

"Mm. Well, let me know when you've got something more concrete," Kris slumped back in the center chair, closing her eyes and just enjoying her coffee

Madalene just nodded tapping a few more buttons, before pulling it up onto the main viewscreen, "here, yes this planetoid is not in our database, but here it is," Madalene said highlighting it.

Kris opened her eyes again and sat up when Madalene explained what she'd seen. "So, just to get things straight. We're back in our prime universe. We have detailed, accurate star charts of this region of space, from before we were thrown into the other place. And that thing doesn't exist in those star charts?"

"Correct, but here's where it gets interesting, I can find reference to something in that region in the data we got from the alternate universe," Madalene added as she pulled up that data, "so either we brought something back with us, or we changed something," she added.

"That warrants researching," Kris mused, rising to her feet and furrowing her brows, looking at the planetoid. "Find out whatever you can. Pull in whatever resources you need. I want a surface scan, detailed readings of that rock's material make-up, life-form scan, atmosphere scan, anything you can find out."

"Of course,* Madalene said putting in a call down to a science, getting several groups on this, "I'll have some results shortly," Madalene said as the scan commenced.

"Take your time. I don't think there's a rush. But we've got a responsibility to report this to Starfleet sciences and I want that report to be as detailed and thorough as possible," Kris mused, starting to pace a bit. "Helm, take us closer, to optimum scanning range," She added. A nod from the helm ensign on duty, and a moment or two later the ship leisurely swung about to head closer to the planetoid.

"Of course, we are looking at most a days worth of scans, but I can at least give you this," Madalene said "A general estimation of the composition of the planetoid, it looks like it is a mix of iron, carbon, and oxygen and then small amounts of silicon, aluminum along with small amounts of other elements and materials," she said pulling up the data.

"Hmmm. Iron core, metallic planetoid. This is all a bit outside my wheelhouse, but still fascinating," Kris smiled. "Is it orbiting something or is it rogue? If it's orbiting something, can you tell if it's a stable or unstable orbit? If it's rogue, can you give us an estimated course?"

"I am not seeing a star, so for right now I am guessing it is rogue, but I don't have an estimated course yet," Madalene said, as she sent this information down to Cydwenn was much better at this than her.

"Get Stellar Cartography involved, focus on finding out where this thing is going. That'll be your first priority. Find out its trajectory, see if it's heading for any gravitational fields or star systems," Kris furrowed her brows. "If this thing has the potential to cause problems for inhabited systems, it'll be best to have as much advance warning as possible," She added, resting a hand on Madalene's shoulder. "Good work so far."

"Of course," Madalene said with a small smirk, seeing as had put a call in already, Madalene stood up she needed to do this down in the stellar cartography lab, "I'll keep you updated," and with that, she was in the lift heading down.
