Personality & Traits
General Overview | Derek has a dry sense of humor that isn't readily apparent upon first meeting him. He tends to keep by himself and doesn't talk much about himself or where he came from. When truly pressed, he simply shares a few details and otherwise deflects further questioning by simply giving a wan smile and telling folks there isn't much to tell.
Strengths & Weaknesses | Level-headed and almost Vulcan-like in his analytical approach to medicine, he isn't going to be swayed by emotional outbursts. He can keep his head under pressure. This sometimes leads to a rough bedside manner that some patients find offputting. |
|
Ambitions | His only real ambition is to continue working as a doctor. It seems to be his one and only real passion in his life.
Hobbies & Interests | He spends his time in detective novels. Cozy mysteries are his favorite. Holodeck time is precious to him. |
History
Personal History | Records indicate he was born on Regulus 1. A hospital fire destroyed the server room containing records and data files on his parentage, but what is known is that his mother and father were not married (there is no record of any marriage or divorce for Donald Martin) and that whoever his mother is has never pressed a claim for custody. He grew up with his father, a Security Officer in Starfleet, roaming from ship to base to planet. Homeschooling as he went, he learned his subjects in his father's quarters and often spent time working hard to excel in his favorite subjects: Biology and Xenobiology. He attended college at Starbase Deep Space Five and took distance learning medical school courses overseen by the base's medical staff. Granted a Medical Doctorate by the Federation, he went into civilian practice and began working at various hospitals and facilities where he was recruited to join a Starfleet Hospital vessel. He served aboard the Olympic Class USS Nightingale. After several years, he resigned his warrant officer's commission and, together with several colleagues, set up a new facility aboard a Cardassian Asteroid mining facility. While the mining staff was greatly reduced, the ore it produced was necessary, and many of the bays were up for use. He and his colleagues set up a training hospital with the goal of helping the beleaguered and nearly destroyed Cardassian Union rebuild its medical infrastructure by providing training to new Cardassian doctors. Several years in, a massive series of explosions rocked the facility causing a failure across the entire operation. Before help could arrive, the asteroid broke up and was destroyed. Among those who survived was Derek. He pursued a civilian practice for a while before turning to Starfleet and was assigned to the USS Odin |
