History

Personal History He was born a literal bastard.

It might be hard to think of any officer graduate of Starfleet Academy to come from such upbringings, but it was the honest truth. Born in 2394 to an unwed mother of a prominent family on the plantation world of Agraria Colony, Tom never could seem to do things right enough to gain favor, no matter the circumstance. The frivolities of his mother never ceased even after his birth, and he was left to raise himself amidst his grandparents and their workers. He was not mother’s first ‘mistake’, having an older brother from a different father; in stark contrast, his brother was driven to a rebellious and vindictive attitude despite his birth father’s own kindness and compassion, shown in a willingness to encourage Tom to visit and be with his half-sibling.

He was a gifted child, or so he was told - he took to studies with ease and efficiency, which led to boredom and trouble when left to flounder on his own with the others of his age. He was quick to learn and pick up concepts, applying them with ease and hungry to speed through to the next subject, the next question, the next answer.

Often hassled for being in the way, he learned early on to find his own plans to get into - whether it be taking on the labor with the plantation hands to learn a hard work ethic, or getting up to no end of mischief just to tweak the nose of his peers and betters. The latter only worsened as he hit adolescence like fire and lightning, with the pent up anger of a young man unable to understand the nature of life gushing out in the rebellious youth of a hellraiser.

But even his raising of hell could be seen in a virtuous - if dimly applied - light; he reminded the privileged of their commonality with the labor class, albeit in less diplomatic means. He drank and caroused with other rebellious sorts, but established himself as the rabble-rouser of the pack, with the ideas and the motivation. Foremost, though, he stood up for the less fortunate, willing to throw hands no matter the odds, if only to put himself between the bullies and the ones who couldn't fight back.

Introduction to Starfleet
It was one of these particularly grievous fights that he got the attention of a Starfleet lieutenant who happened to be on leave in the very same bar he was causing a ruckus in. Despite his record, this seasoned officer saw something in Tom's rebel yell attitude, and took the time to coax and convince the young man to apply himself in more positive ways. Tom tended to humor the man, who was willing to tell him stories of life among the stars and all of the interesting places the lieutenant had been to. With some cajoling, the lieutenant was able to convince Tom to give a shot in at least trying the first part of the Academy entrance exam - actually, it was more of a drinking bet.

Despite his upbringing, Tom was hesitant; no matter the bravado and bluster he could manage when charging into a fight, inside he believed he'd never leave that farm world and would always be a mistake on the books there. He finally acquiesced, not even willing to look at the marks after he'd taken them.

The lieutenant didn't comment on them either, having a good read on the young man he'd befriended. On the last day of the lieutenant's extended leave, without preamble he presented Tom with the opportunity - a passport and transit ticket to Sol, and a simple promise: he could apply to Starfleet, or he could make his own way in whatever way he chose. But Tom Jameson was good enough to earn whatever way he chose through the galaxy, and didn't have to stay in the shadows of some backwoods farming colony. With that the lieutenant left him.

Service Record Starfleet Academy was a complete culture shock to the farmboy; although he'd lived in the more urban area of Agraria, he'd never experienced the diversity and richness that one of the busiest places in the known galaxy had to offer.

Tom's first year at the Academy was trying at best, as his stubbornly independent nature caused him issues in his course work as well as getting along with humanoids from further away than his native Agraria. After a few scuffles with fellow classmates, his adventurous nature took him to places he was not necessarily welcome.

He was also quick to learn that his raucous attitude wasn't the toughest thing in the galaxy anymore; he butted heads with a number of extra-solar cadets, and had to temper himself quickly in order to keep from getting put out on his own. His instructors hammered into him that if he wanted to earn that delta, he had to shape up and fly right.

By Tom's second year, he was dangerously close to being put on review for dismissal, until now-Lieutenant Commander Pena’s mentoring presence re-entered the scene. Pena had been watching Tom's progress with mixed feelings, and saw only one remaining chance for the Cadet; Pena suggested Tom take on flight school. In one way it was to get Tom to sit still and behave, in the most basic sense. In another, it would provide him the anchor to steer his life, both literally and figuratively. The invitation was not open-ended, as Pena made strict notice that any more incidents from then on would lead to Tom's immediate dismissal from Starfleet.

As he went through the basic classwork of astronavigation and flight, Tom was uncertain if he would be able to live up to the standards that Pena demanded - that was, until his first unsupervised training flight in the cockpit of a Starfleet Trainer. The freedom of flight that was bestowed upon him snapped something in Tom's psyche.

He redoubled his efforts in learning piloting and astronavigation, the former becoming an outlet for his free-charging spirit, the latter a chance to prove his quick mind could keep up with the best and the brightest. He joined the Academy Flight Demonstration Team. He found a way to hone his fighting spirit on the Academy Boxing Team. From then on he took to heart all of the requirements of training, discipline, and cooperation. His independence remained, but it was subdued for the greater good - in most cases. With this reforged spirit, he went on to graduate in 2416 in the top ten percent of his class.

After graduation from Starfleet Academy, Jameson was commissioned as an Ensign and was assigned to Starbas 237 to gain experience on extra-solar flight, serving four years as a shuttle pilot moving cargo and personnel between the Starbase and various points in the Alpha Cygnus sector.
